Summer Camp 2009 - Daniel Boone & Comer

Troop 2 is attending two Camps this summer. One group of 15 Scouts and four Leaders just returned June 12th from Camp Daniel Boone near Waynesville, NC as winners of the coveted "Longrifle Award" for Honor Troop. The Unit also won "Best Skit" for their rendition of "If I Were Not a Boy Scout". Troop 2 won these awards over 35 Troops from 15 States. All of the Troop members attending had a great time. They enjoyed the great weather - high in low 80's and lows in upper 50's. We also had breathtaking scenery and lots of fun activities. Some even swam in Lake Allen - though the temperature this time of year is around 56 degrees.

The Troop stayed in Junaluska Campsite central to all activities and completed several Merit Badges as well as two Service Projects. The four Leaders in attendance (Mr. Pate, Mr. Collins, Mr. Bowers and Mr. Faulkner) were all made Honorary Staffers by the Camp for their hard work. They also earned their Scoutmaster Merit Badges by completing a number of requirements around Camp.

The fun was not limited to just "normal"Camp activities. It seems a Troop from Palm Beach, Florida showed up with some "sick" Scouts that created an epidemic around Camp. By Thursday night 6/11 two Scouts had been diagnosed with "Swine Flu". Based on this and certain health issues we were having with one Scout we decided to pull out a day early knowing we had already earned the Longrifle Award. Good thing we came home early as a few more of our Scouts started experiencing flu like symptoms. Needless to say, the drive back was like the "Day That Would Never End". Fortunately we made it back ok and everyone seems to be getting better. We did clean & sanitize the Bus for our Comer Scouts on Saturday 6/13.

For all their hard work and overcoming the adversity of a Flu pandemic, the Leaders awarded each Scout attending CDB the "Camp Daniel Boone - Swine Patrol" designation. A special patch will be made for those who earned this "extra effort" award for the memory of what they accomplished and overcame.

The second half of our Troop left for Camp Comer near Mentone, AL on Sunday 6/14. Roughly 20 Scouts and 3 Leaders are in attendance. We know they will have a great time at the Greater Alabama Council's flagship Camp. They have high expectations of themselves and we anticipate more fun and summer adventures for our Scouts. Updates to come as the week progresses.
